December 2012 Newsletter Friends
– Fitness – Fun Don’t Forget – You Must Remember! The last day of practice will be Friday, December 21. Next
year, we will start practices on Thursday, January 3rd. I will be away with the UNO team when we start back and need two coaches
to help out. Thank you Gary for volunteering to coach on Jan 3rd. Who can coach on Jan 7th? Everyone needs to be a 2013
USMS members before they come to swim practice on January 3. If you signed up for USMS after November (2012) then your membership
is good for 2013. This is not a suggestion - this is a MUST. USMS is the insurance leg of our program in which everyone in
the pool and on the deck must have either USMS or USA Swimming membership in order for all to be covered. (Our club is the
Omaha Masters option on the USMS registration form.) The cost for the program will remain the same this upcoming year.
A price increase was being considered, but decided at this point in time the goal will be to hold steady regarding fees. The
annual fee is $20. Coaching fees are either quarterly at $90 or the monthly cost at $35. If you pay for everything for the
whole year then $10 is knocked off (annual fee + coaching fee - $10 = $370).
Thank You! This year was another fun Holiday Social. Thank you Erin for organizing the event again this year. Thank you Mary
Pat for opening up your church for our group. And thank you Steve for carving up the turkey ☺
Something Old – Something New The Omaha Masters Swim Club has had a logo for many years. Just recently
Erin Sullivan took the logo to PrintMakers to get a quote to have the logo embroidered or silkscreened on a bag (jacket or
shirt). It turned out great! Erin will be putting together a process for ordering merchandise – you can either provide
your own bag or buy from a small selection. The cost for embroidery is $15. Details will be announced after the Holiday Break.
Going National Once a month on a Saturday, Erin Sullivan is going to be hosting a
postal event. Last month it was a 400 Timed Kick. For the month of January she will be conducting the Hour Swim. You try to
see how far you can swim in one hour. Sound like a great challenge? We have done this before, and it is a great to see what
you are made of! Consider going after this event!!!
Program Philosophy Our program
means many things to many people: a weight loss or weight maintenance program, stress release, or a choice of fitness. You
might be a person that has the competitive itch: swimming or triathlons. Just as goals are varied, so are individual personalities.
Remember that the way you approach your swimming is not always the same way your lane mates approach their swimming. These
varied and individual styles can lead to little frustration popping up every once in awhile. Since we are adults, most differences
can be sorted out within the lane. Please approach each other with open minds and appreciation for differences in our individual
goals. Every once in awhile differences may be difficult to resolve. It is at this point that you should get me involved so
we can find common ground and we can determine the best solution. We have a great program that tries to make room for anyone
who wants to participate in a structured workout and I would like to keep that philosophy. - Todd
